01Our verdict
Truist is unusual among big banks in that it does not just offer auto refinancing, it offers it three different ways. There is a classic secured refinance that uses your car as collateral, an unsecured auto refinance that requires no collateral, no appraisal, and no vehicle age or mileage restrictions, and then there is LightStream, Truist's online lending brand, which runs its own unsecured auto refinance for strong credit. None of the three charges origination fees or prepayment penalties, which is genuinely borrower-friendly.

The flip side of three products is confusion: searchers routinely cannot tell which Truist thing they are applying for, and the unsecured options carry higher rate floors than a good secured refinance because the bank takes more risk without a lien. Truist is worth pricing, especially if your car is old or high-mileage enough that secured lenders decline it. But the same rule applies as everywhere else: one brand's three quotes still are not the market. Put the numbers next to a multi-lender comparison before you sign.

What it does well

  • Both secured and unsecured refinance options under one roof
  • No origination fees and no prepayment penalties
  • The unsecured loan has no vehicle age or mileage restrictions

Where it gives ground

  • Three overlapping products (Truist secured, Truist unsecured, LightStream) confuse applicants
  • Unsecured pricing runs higher than a competitive secured refinance
  • The best terms effectively require good to excellent credit
02Does Truist refinance car loans?

Yes, twice over. Truist's secured auto refinance works like a normal refi: the new loan uses your car as collateral, which generally earns a lower rate. Its unsecured auto refinance is the rarer product: no collateral, no appraisal, and no restrictions on the age or mileage of your vehicle, because the loan is not tied to the car at all. Both come with no origination fees and no prepayment penalties.

There is also a third route that technically is not Truist-branded: LightStream, Truist's online lending division, runs a well-known unsecured auto refinance aimed at good to excellent credit. We cover LightStream separately, but if you have been quoted by both, you have effectively been quoted by the same parent company twice.

03Secured vs unsecured: which Truist product fits

The secured refinance is the default choice when your vehicle qualifies, because collateral usually buys a lower rate. Qualifying factors include your credit profile, the age and condition of the vehicle, loan-to-value, and debt-to-income. If your car is newer and your credit is solid, price the secured product first.

The unsecured refinance earns its keep when the car itself is the problem: classic cars, high-mileage commuters, or vehicles past the age caps most secured lenders enforce. You pay for that flexibility with a higher rate floor, so it only wins when secured lenders will not play at all. That trade is worth making deliberately, not by accident.

04The Truist, LightStream, and Regional Acceptance family tree

Truist's auto lending family is bigger than most borrowers realize. Truist branches sell the secured and unsecured refinance. LightStream, an online brand of Truist, sells unsecured auto loans nationally to strong credit. And Regional Acceptance, also a Truist subsidiary, operates at the other end of the market entirely, financing subprime purchases through dealerships without offering refinancing at all.

Knowing the map matters because searchers mix these up constantly. If you have excellent credit and an odd vehicle, LightStream or Truist unsecured may fit. If you have a Regional Acceptance loan you are trying to escape, no Truist-family product will lower it; you need an outside lender. Same parent, completely different doors.

05How to decide

Truist deserves a spot on the comparison list, particularly for the unsecured niche it serves well. But three products from one parent still represent one lender's appetite for your loan. Credit unions and refinance specialists price the same borrower differently, and the spread is where savings live.

Run a two-minute marketplace check with your actual payoff and vehicle, then put Truist's best number next to the results. If Truist wins, take it: the no-fee structure makes it a clean loan to hold. If the market wins, you just avoided leaving money with the first brand you happened to recognize.

06Who it fits

Truist makes sense if

  • Owners of older or high-mileage cars that secured lenders decline
  • Good-credit borrowers who want a no-fee, no-penalty loan
  • Existing Truist customers who value one-bank convenience

Look elsewhere if

  • Credit-challenged borrowers who need subprime-friendly lenders
  • Anyone who wants the absolute lowest secured rate without shopping
  • People who cannot tell which Truist product they are pricing (compare all three)
07Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

Does Truist refinance car loans?

Yes. Truist offers a secured auto refinance that uses your car as collateral and an unsecured auto refinance with no collateral, no appraisal, and no vehicle age or mileage limits. Both have no origination fees and no prepayment penalties.

What is the difference between Truist and LightStream auto refinance?

LightStream is Truist's online lending brand. It offers unsecured auto refinancing nationally, aimed at good to excellent credit. Truist's own branches offer both a secured and an unsecured refinance. They are separate applications from the same parent company.

Can Truist refinance an old or high-mileage car?

Yes, through its unsecured auto refinance, which has no restrictions on vehicle age or mileage because the loan is not secured by the car. Expect a higher rate than a competitive secured refinance in exchange for that flexibility.

Does Truist charge fees to refinance an auto loan?

Truist advertises no origination fees and no prepayment penalties on its auto refinance products as of 2026.

Will Regional Acceptance lower my rate since it is part of Truist?

No. Regional Acceptance is Truist's subprime purchase-financing arm and does not offer refinancing. To lower the rate on a Regional Acceptance loan, you refinance with a different lender, which pays it off and takes over the loan.
